Royal Wootton Bassett is administered by Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council and the unitary authority and registrar is Wiltshire Council.  

The closest communities to Royal Wootton Bassett are West Swindon to the east, Lydiard Millicent to the north-east and Wroughton to the south-east.

Transportation

The nearest station to Royal Wootton Bassett is Swindon.  The town is served by the A3102 which which connects it to Swindon to the east and Melksham towards the south-west.  Being near Junction 16 of M4 motorway provides a connection to Bristol, London and South Wales, as well as easy access to other towns and cities along the M4 corridor.

Parking and Amenities

There is free parking on the High Street between Coxstalls roundabout to the the Town Hall for up to 2 hours and paid parking in the main main car park in Borough Fields.  The High Street has 6 disabled spaces and there are more in the main car park. 

Visitors are politely asked not park in bays on the High Street with cones after 6am on Wednesday (market day) mornings between Alan Hawkins and St Bartholomew’s & All Saints Church on the High Street. 

Public toilets are located in Borough Fields and there two pharmacies on the High Street and one in Borough Fields.

History

The recorded history of the town starts in AD681, and in the time since then the population has grown to almost 14,000.
Between 2007 and 2011, Wootton Bassett was synonymous with the repatriation of UK soldiers killed in Afghanistan. 

In March 2011, the town was granted royal patronage by Elizabeth II in honour of the military funeral repatriations, which passed through the High Street, and the many residents who regularly paid their respects to the fallen.
