Churchyard and Cemetery Burials

Churchyard and Cemetery Burials

A churchyard or cemetery burial provides a permanent memorial or mausoleum where you can visit your loved one whenever you wish.

Whatever the chosen final resting place for your loved one we will be on hand to provide support and information.  For many this is comforting and helps with the grieving process.  Burial is normally preferred by the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths and among older generations is generally considered more traditional.

Under English common law anyone who lives in a parish has the right to be buried in the local churchyard or burial ground. Also anyone who dies in a parish has the same right irrespective of the length of time they have lived there.

Churchyards and cemeteries all have unique rules, regulations and fee structures. Seating capacity and amenities will also vary and we can provide appropriate information and advice regarding local venues.

If you wish to bury your loved one in a family plot we will try to organise its re-opening assuming that permission can be obtained and enough space is available.  In cases where the grave documents have been mislaid we can usually resolve the matter promptly and without delaying the funeral.

Churchyards

Churchyards invariably belong to the adjoining parish church and although the plot will assigned for your loved one, rights to any burial plot (deeds) will not be issued.

Cemeteries

Cemeteries are typically owned and operated by a Parish Council, Local Authority or a private company.  They differ from churchyards in that they normally issue certificates of ownership (Deeds).
